Stitched seam strength test. The seam strength test of the stitched pillow cover shall be performed on one stitched seam per cover. The seam specimen to be tested shall be one inch wide and shall be cut from any point along the seam. For breaking strength of the stitched seam, the seam shall be at the center of the specimen and perpendicular to the center line. The free ends of be gripped (one in each jaw) in the testing machine. A breaking strength of less than 20 pounds per linear inch shall constitute a failure.
Resistance to boiling water test. (Vinyl plastic sheeting only). The vinyl plastic pillow cover shall be placed in boiling water for six hours. Failure for the cover to remain free from brittleness or stickness shall constitute a failure.
Stain resistance to blood or saliva test. Pour 5 ml of blood (human, warm blooded animal, or fowl) or saliva (human) on a specimen of pillow cover sheeting 12 inches square. Spread the blood or saliva to a thin even layer. After drying, the dried specimen shall be allowed to remain in contact with the plastic film for 24 hours. The specimen shall then be washed off with a cloth or sponge using soap and water. Any residual stains or discoloration shall constitute a failure.
Stain resistance to oil or grease test. Pour 5 ml of oil (light mineral oil, USP, or castor oil, USP), or 5 grams of petrolatum, on a specimen of plastic sheeting 12 inches square. Spread the oil or petrolatum to a thin layer. Allow the oil or petrolatum to remain in contact with the plastic film for 24 hours. The specimen shall then be washed off with a cloth or sponge using soap and water. Any residual stains or discoloration shall constitute a failure.
Stain resistance to alcohol test. Pour 5 ml of rubbing isopropyl alcohol or 70 percent ethyl alcohol on a specimen of plastic sheeting 12 inches square. Spread to a thin layer. Permit the alcohol to evaporate at room temperature. Repeat the procedure every half hour for four hours, wash with a cloth or sponge using soap or water. Any residual stains or discoloration shall constitute a failure.
