The finished mattress shall be flat, smooth, uniform, correct in all dimensions, clean, and odor free. The ticking shall be free from holes, cuts, tears, weaving flaws, mends, soil, dirt, stains, thread pulls, and other fabric defects. Seams shall be secure and shall not slip or pull out. Seams shall be free from any needle chews, unsecured ends of stitching, loose or unclipped threads; raw edges, open seams, puckering, pleating, or twisting, loose or tight stitch tension, or unevenly spaced stitches. Chain stitched seams shall be chained off leaving a 1/2 inch (1.3 m) nominal length tail. All seams shall be straight and uniform.
The mattress construction shall be free from sagging appearance, unevenly distributed filling, clearly noticeable lumps, thin hollow places, corner(s) not firm, or box edge or corner having insufficient padding. Top or bottom face-panel ticking shall not be spliced. When applicable, stripes shall run lengthwise of the mattress and shall be properly matched.
The box edge shall be firmly constructed and fabricated with no more than four pieces of ticking. Any splice shall fall at the middle of a corner. Box edges shall be sharply defined. Binding tape shall extend completely around edge of mattress and no more than three pieces of binding tape shall be used on an edge. The binding tape shall not be puckered, pleated, or twisted.
When applicable, outer tufting shall appear on both sides of
mattress. Knots of tufting tape shall not appear above surface on either side
of mattress. Tufting spacing and depth shall be uniform and shall hold the
mattress upholstery securely in position.
3.8 Measurement system. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The metric values stated in parentheses are for information purposes only.
3.9 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, providing they fall within the tolerances specified and all other requirements of this document are met. If a product is manufactured to metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in the inch-pound units, a request should be made to the specification preparing activity for changes to this document.
3.10 Commercial item. The use of the term “commercial item” in this document does not imply that any item or items offered are not required to conform with all requirements specified herein.
