3.3 Materials
3.3.1 Felt. The felt shall be made of 50 percent
cotton and 50 percent cotton linters having a minimum of 10 percent boric acid
treatment by weight compared to the weight of the cotton. The felt shall be
clean, well garneted, and produced in unbroken laminated sheets. The use of oil
in the fabrication of the felt shall not be permitted.
The cotton shall be 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) (minimum) staple cotton and not lower in
grade than the lowest grade in the white, spotted, or Department of Agriculture
Publication No. C&MS-SRA-180. The use of reginned cotton will be permitted
provided the grade of the reginned cotton is equivalent to the grade specified
above. Tinged or stained cotton shall not be permitted.
The linters shall conform to grade 5, staple 5, of USDA Publication No. C&MS-SRA-180.
3.3.2 Ticking. The ticking shall be cotton, shall be suitable for mattress covers, and shall have a durable, non-toxic flame resistant treatment. The flame resistant ticking may be vinyl coated for liquid repellency.
The cotton ticking shall be flame resistant treated twill fabric with a weight range of 6.5 oz./sq yd (170 g/sq m) to 8.5 oz/sq yd 283 g/sq when tested in accordance with ASTM D 3776. The fabric shall have a minimum breaking strength of 95 lb (143 kg) in the warp direction and 50 lb (23 kg) in the filling direction when tested in accordance with ASTM D 1682.
The fabric shall have a colorfastness rating of 4 or higher to dry crocking and a rating of 3 or higher to wet crocking when tested in accordance with AATCC 8. The pH value of the ticking fabric shall be not less than 4.5 and not more than 8.0 when tested in accordance with FED-STD-191, Test Method 2811.
